CNC Machining FAQs
What is CNC machining?
CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control. CNC machining is the process of using a computer-controlled machine to remove material from a workpiece. This is done using sharp cutting tools that are available in various shapes and sizes, which are precisely controlled by the computer.
How CNC machining works?
CNC machining starts with a digital design of the part, which is created using CAD (Computer-aided Design) software. This digital design is then converted into a format that the CNC machine can read.
The instructions for machining are sent to the CNC machine in the form of G-Code. The machine then starts cutting the workpiece. The workpiece is held in place by a work holding device on the worktable, which may or may not move depending on the type of machine.
The cutting tool is moved based on the G-Code instructions, and layers of material are removed from the workpiece until the part is finished. The tool and/or workpiece can be rapidly rotated or moved to make cuts in the right places.
Different types of CNC machine
There are several types of CNC machines that are commonly used in manufacturing. These include CNC mills, CNC lathes, CNC routers, and Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) machines.
CNC mills have rotating cutting tools that move to different areas of the workpiece to make cuts. They are ideal for making a wide range of parts. On the other hand, CNC lathes rotate the workpiece against a stationary cutting tool and are perfect for creating cylindrical parts.
CNC routers are similar to CNC mills, but they have less power and are unable to cut the hardest materials. However, they can be faster than CNC mills. EDM machines use electrical discharges to cut materials, and there is no physical contact between the tool and the workpiece.
CNC machines are classified based on their number of axes. A higher number of axes allows for more complex cuts and greater cutting flexibility, which makes it possible to create more intricate parts in a shorter time.
Choosing a higher tolerance than required isn’t a good idea when designing parts. If +/-0.05mm is sufficient, then going for +/-0.01mm will increase the production cost. However, CNC machining provides unrivaled accuracy and consistency when tolerances as fine as 0.01mm are required.
A wide range of materials can be used with CNC machining, including metal, copper, brass, zinc, magnesium, bronze, titanium, steel, and other plastics like PEEK, ABS, PC, PMMA, Teflon, and PPS.
We use CNC tools and technologies to guarantee tight tolerances in our machining processes. Our multi-axis CNC machines are equipped with CNC milling & turning precision grinding and EDM machines to ensure tight tolerances. Additionally, we employ experienced and skilled CNC engineers and operators to oversee quality control and production.
High-precision products require intricate design and extremely precise manufacturing processes. Manufactured products such as defense, healthcare, electronics, sports, aerospace, agriculture, and automotive are some of the products that require high-precision CNC manufacturing.
Software is a critical part of the CNC machine process, and there are several types of software you’ll need for a CNC machine. For example, CAD/CAM, Aspire, Inkscape, Easel, Fusion 360, SolidWorks, etc.
We will continue to share our knowledge and experience in innovative manufacturing. These articles cover stories about advanced rapid prototyping and rapid manufacturing technologies. Hope to help you optimize product design and find better solutions for the new product development.
