How will Trumps Foreign Policy Affect Manufacturing in Vietnam?
This is my latest fixation. Love him or hate him, he does not mess around and he will create change. As business owners we need to consider how his foreign policy will affect our businesses. The Trump Effect will not be good for Vietnam.
You might say, Vietnam will get more business. This is true but this trend started in 2017 when Trump first imposed additional duties on Chinese goods. Vietnam will get more business but can the government/economy/people react quickly enough to capitalize on the increasing demand for manufacturing?
If Trump increases tariff's on Chinese goods then Vietnam's manufacturing sector will be stress tested. Remember that Vietnam is less than 1/10 the size of China. Remember that for apparel, Vietnam imports 80% of the fabric it needs to sew all the garments it exports. I believe that Vietnam manufacturing is saturated and will struggle to absorb more orders quickly.
As always, buyer beware. Vietnam may seem like the quick, easy, go to solution but don't let your guard down. Stick to the basics: do your tech packs well, know your China price, budget for inline inspections and final 3rd party QC inspections based on AQL standards.
